Does anyone remember the Woven Leather Duck or Cow Haven?
Started in 1972, in the old Roxy Theatre, the Woven Leather Duck was a custom leather store that could make almost anything out of leather.
After outgrowing their space, the Woven Leather Duck changed ownership, changed names, and moved across the street and up a block to the "hippie strip.” Now called Cow Haven, they joined other long-standing Missoula businesses like Butterfly Herbs, The Shirt Shop, Rockin’ Rudy's, and the Trailhead.
In 1975, Scott Sproull purchased the store and after "The Mall" opened in 1978, relocated the business to the other side of the Clark Fork River, often referred to as "The Downtown.” At that point, it was still operating as a custom leather store, but unforeseen to Scott, he had moved into the old Oggs Shoe store.
Scott came to the realization in 1979 that he didn't have to make everything. He could buy quality shoes, sandals, and leather goods. He changed the name to Hide & Sole and the rest is history. His first brand, Birkenstock, sold extremely well and introduced him to European Comfort Shoes. This led to other comfort brands like Dansko, Born, and Haflinger.
Catering to the active Montana lifestyle, Keen, Merrell, Chaco, Oboz, New Balance, and Teva were later added to the mix.
Holding onto the roots of the business, Hide & Sole still carries a wide selection of leather, supplies and hardware. Whether you're looking for Bison, Deer, Elk, Cow, Goat, Pig, Sheepskin, Upholstery leather, Chap, Split (suede), Oak Tan, Latigo, or Bridle leather, we probably have it.
